The present work is English Translation of an award winning Hindi book-Bharatiya Samaja Mein Nari Adarshon ka Vikasa, written by late Pt. Chandra Bali Tripathi. The book, in addition to being a compendium of traditions and practices so far as these impacted on the position of women in Indian society, is a critical appraisal of the same from an objective angle. While it eulogizes the strong points in the social matrix in various ages, it does not hesitate in bringing out the shortcoming which had resulted in denial to the women of their rightful share in building the social fabric. Replete with quotations from original sources, adding to its authenticity, the book expands its horizon by including a thorough comparative study of the situation obtaining in other societies. The Hindi book has been widely acclaimed by scholars of Indian History and Sociology as well as by the general reader.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Chandra Bali Tripathi
Late Pt. Chandra Bali Tripathi (b. 1893, d. 1985) had taken prominent part in India’s Freedom Struggle in close association with Madan Mohan Malaviya and others. Though he took up legal profession for a living, his abiding interest lay in serious literary pursuits. He was an erudite scholar of Sanskrit and Philosophy and has enriched Hindi literature with renowned books, like Dharmaraja Yudhishthira and Bharatiya Samaja Mein Nari Adarshon ka Vikasa. He is, however, pre-eminently recognized as an erudite scholar of Indian Philosophy on account of his monumental works Upanishad Rahasya, Part I, the other two parts being in press.

Shri C.M. Mani (b. 8.2.1929 at Basti in U.P., India) retired from Indian Railways as Additional General Manager, having previously held top positions, like Div. Rly.
