A low sound is pleasant, whereas, loud sound is unpleasant and is commonly referred to as "Noise". Noise can be defined as an unpleasant and unwanted sound. Sound pollution causes due to industrialized urban life and congestion and over population. Noise pollution is not fatal to human life, yet its importance cannot be overlooked, because repeated exposure to sound reduces the sleeping hours and productivity or efficiency of a human being. Sound is not a chemical, it is simply a wave motion in air. As such it does not accumulate in the environment. Sound waves travel through the medium from the source where the sound is produced to the recipient or listener. Surface motor vehicles, including automobiles, trucks and motorcycles produce approximately 85 per cent of all intrusive environmental noise. Sound pollution causes a large array of annoyance effects and behavioural change in human and animals, it causes frustration and sleep disturbance. To live healthy, peacefully, stress free life, we need pollution free environment society. Sound pollution causes various problems for human being, so it need due consideration. ABOUT THE AUTHOR R.N. Misra

Dr. R.N. Misra completed his post graduation in 1971. He was awarded Ph.D. from Berhampur University in 1992. Dr. Misra has large number of published works on UGC sponsored projects. A prolific writer, his books include Rural Banking in India: Business Organisation; Business System, and Rural Development and Population etc. He has about twelve articles to his credit, published in national journals and 30 articles in different other journals. His area of specialization is rural development in socio-economic perspective. At present he is guiding many scholars for their doctoral research. Having literary penchant, Dr. Misra has published four collections of poems in Oriya. He is associated with a number of voluntary organizations engaged in social activities. Currently, he is a senior faculty member, Dept. of Commerce, Science college, Hinjilicut, Ganjam, Orissa (Berhampur University).
